In 2009 the federal government of Canada announced a significant investment of $44 million to redevelop the Canadian Customs Plaza in Sault Ste. Marie to accommodate increased border security, increased commercial truck traffic, and a new truck route. The St. Mary’s International Bridge is the only port of entry for cars and trucks traveling between Canada and the United States for a 1,300 km section of the border that stretches from Sarnia to Pigeon River.
